Report by John Diggens

This past week in the Guildford Table Tennis League First Division Abinger A alleviated their relegation woes somewhat with an 8-2 victory over higher placed Merrow E.

Abinger’s Chris Pullinger.

A feature of the evening was that six of the matches went to five sets five of them won by the “out of towners”. Chris Pullinger and Mike Hughes starred in this major upset.

In the Second Division a rather staggering result was the 10-0 score line of Godalming H over their G side. They hold adjacent positions in the table. Carsten Horne, Sebastian Adler and Brian Mitchell are certainly “putting on the style” just recently.

Bramley’s Angela Coventry pictured with Peter Coventry, playing doubles.

Second in the table Aftermath C got a 7-3 win over bottom of the table Bramley C. Dave Wilson got a triple plus the doubles. Angela Coventry replied with a couple.

The Third Division saw Aftermath D, who were early pace setters, losing ground, despite a superb maximum from John Setterfield, by going down to Godalming L 6-4 who are actually locked in a relegation battle at the foot. of the table.

In Division Four, Godalming R overcame a League deficit of 40 points against second in the table Abinger with a 7-3 result. James Scott was unbeaten in singles and doubles, Yazmin Hodgson Castillo got two in this outstanding achievement. Jim Faulkner responded with a credible two points.

Guildford Junior League (Clausura) – Round 4. Report by Adam Laws

Merrow Hawks remain top of the table with an emphatic 5-0 victory over the Thunderbolts. The match, however, was much closer than the scoreline suggests as two matches went the distance: Dan Godsill had a tough battle against Kyle Kepa, winning 11-5 in the fifth and then in a nail-biting doubles, Dan and Dominic Wright combined to edge out Kyle and Anton Kepa 18-16 in the decider!

J² defeated Christ’s College 4-1 to remain in second place. Micah Hall of Christ’s College scored his team’s only point with a 3-0 victory over Joss Beedie.

Tom Hall actually won more points in his match against Joss but still ended up on the wrong side of a 3-11, 11-9, 12-10, 13-11 scoreline. James Scott of J² impressively won both his singles and combined with Joss to take the doubles.

The Overtakers lived up to their name once more and moved up two places to third with a win over VTC.

Andrei Cherciu and Joe Sparkes took both their singles against Vlad Cretu and Thomas Alderton-Bailey. Then young Charlie Everingham stepped in to partner Joe in the doubles and take his first GJL win. They combined to defeat Claudia Vincent and Vlad 3-1.

In the match between the Apertura league’s top two teams, the Top Spinners scored a formidable 4-1 win against the Merrow Demons. Vincent Quiambao was again in top form for the ‘Spinners; He didn’t even drop a set in defeating both Tom Gartner and Henry Evans 3-0. Owain Osmond-Gillam held his nerve well to edge out Tom 11-9 in the fourth, but then just missed out by a similar scoreline to Henry. Vincent and Owain then linked up to take the doubles 3-0. These two sides are currently in fourth and fifth place but still have a very good chance of winning the league – especially the Top Spinners, who have a game in hand.

Match scores:

Christ’s College1 – J² 4

VTC 0 – The Overtakers 5

Top Spinners 4– Merrow Demons 1

The Thunderbolts 0 – Merrow Hawks 5
