In The Guildford Table Tennis League the battle for dominance in Division One is heating up with only seven points separating the top four clubs.

Merrow E leapt to the head of the pack with a 10-0 win, courtesy of a two man Godalming D side. Interestingly, of the 23 sets played during the evening 14 were won by only two points. In the words of  a participant: “It didn’t feel like a 10-0 night.”

Abinger continued their climb to safety with a draw against College B, Chris Pullinger again starred with a flawless maximum.

Merrow’s Anshuman Richharia.

Division Two and Merrow F went top with a fine 8-2 win over fourth placed College C. Anshuman Richharia, Paul Farrant and Max Flint were the ‘Main Men’ in their push for glory.

Merrow’s young star Max Flint.

In Division Three a two-man College Hill E drew with ‘Champions in Waiting’ Bramley E, Peter Norman and Melvin Rose performed  a bit of magic winning all three of the five setters in some very tight games.

In another major upset, Ash B took out a good Godalming J side 10-0 to go top. Margaret Thornton led the charge. It looks like a two-horse race for the championship at this time, however Bramley still have a couple of games in hand.

Down in the lower regions of the League, Godalming P beat Bramley G 7-3, although Dick Nevitt, not for the first time, starred for the village side with an immaculate three singles, including victory over high flying junior Vincent Quiambao.

Nevitt was denied a full house when he lost the doubles in five sets, but a feature of this particular match was an 11-0 win by Dick and partner in the second set.

Your correspondent played in this encounter getting a derisory ‘Nil Points’. In a nod towards recently deceased Andre Previn and the magnificent Eric Morecambe: “I’m playing all the right shots, but not necessarily in the right order!”

I also played in the doubles with hysterical cries of “Yes ! Yes!” after the aforementioned second set.
