Report by John Diggens

This last week in the Guildford Table Tennis League First Division there was a crucial clash at the peak.

Third placed Aftermath B took on table toppers Merrow E. John Grant starred for the village club setting the scene in the opening encounter with victory over Trevor Sanders in a tight match.

Unusually for Trevor, he only scored a single on the night. It was left to Steve Cheek to salvage something for Aftermath with two wins in an overall 6-4 reverse for Aftermath.

Godalming’s Chris King.

Godalming E slid into runners up position with an 8-2 win over Bramley A. Chris King, who has impressed this season, and Adrian Cretu, reigned supreme with ‘full houses’ This rather puts Bramley very much in a relegation fight for survival in the second tier.

Godalming’s Ruo Chen.

The Second Division provided an interesting result with Merrow F, astride this division like a colossus, only beat seventh in the table Godalming G 6-4. However, Anshuman Richharia, playing to form, got three. Ruo Chen took a brace for the losers.

The Third Division provided a battle royal in the relegation zone with a five all draw between College Hill E and Godalming L. Colin Thompson got a well earned three for the Haslemere side, two of which went the distance. Rob Chatwin replied with two for Godalming.

In Division Four a very competitive draw saw Rick Clement of College Hill get a very good win, at deuce in the fifth, against Merrow’s Trevor Free. Similarly the Hill also edged the doubles to gain a very credible result against the ‘champions in waiting’.

Guildford Junior League (Clausura) – Round 6

Report by Adam Laws

The Top Spinners moved two points clear at the top of the table with a 5-0 win over the Thunderbolts.

Vincent Quiambao and Owain Osmond-Gillam, representing the Spinners, were too strong for the Thunderbolts’ Kyle and Anton Kepa. Only Anton managed to take a game off Vincent in a 3-1 defeat. The rest of the matches ended in 3-0 wins for the Top Spinners, who only need four more points to take the title.

Merrow Demons moved into joint second place with a commanding 5-0 win over the Overtakers, who ironically were overtaken by their victors.

In a tremendous tussle, the Demons’ Tom Gartner defeated Joe Sparkes 14-12 in the fifth game. After that, the Demons managed to win the last four matches for the loss of only one end – 10-year-old Charlie Everingham doing extremely well to take an end off the much older Henry Evans.

VTC managed to win their first match – the doubles in a 4-1 defeat to Christ’s College. Vlad Cretu and Claudia Vincent getting through a tight five-setter against Tom and Micah Hall.

Earlier on, Tom and Micah did manage to win all their singles. Vlad came closest to winning for VTC in a 3-1 defeat to Tom.

The tightest contest of the day was the match between J² and Merrow Hawks.

James Scott of J²was involved in two very close contests: He just missed out 13-11 in the decider against Dominic Wright but managed to edge out his second match 11-9 in the fifth against Dan Godsill.

Dominic completed his brace with a 3-1 win over Joss Beedie, who in turn defeated Dan 3-0.

For the second week in a row, J²’s match result would be decided by the doubles and for the second week in a row they were edged out. This time it was much closer as Dan and Dominic came away with a tight 9-11, 15-13, 11-7, 12-10 victory against James and Joss. Final score: 3-2 to Merrow Hawks.

Match scores:

Christ’s College 4 – VTC 1

The Overtakers 0 – Merrow Demons 5

J² 2 – Merrow Hawks 3

Top Spinners 5 – The Thunderbolts 0
