Report by John Diggens
This past week saw Guildford Table Tennis League represented by Merrow’s John Robinson and Godalming’s Adam Laws, win the Surrey County Inter League Championship, which was held at the Graham Spicer Institute in New Malden.
In an all-day event they defeated teams from Croydon, Haslemere, Sutton and Wandsworth.
Back to more local matters, the Handicap final was won by Farnborough 6-1 against Challoner in a rather one-sided affair. Nigel Roberts, Alan Richards and Ken Thompson took the honours.
In Division Two a last gasp effort, courtesy of a 7-3 victory over their H side, saw Godalming F gain promotion by five points over College C. This was after a great season long scrap between the two sides.
In the Premier, Ash finally succumbed to the spectre of relegation, going down by the smallest of margins between them and rivals, Godalming C and College Hill A.
After, at one time, seeming to have done enough to escape, their fate was sealed following Godalming C’s 6-4 victory over Merrow C. In Division One, there is the only issue left in the entire League with a melee of teams facing the drop with Bramley. What with late scorecards and the usual bevy of foreseeable unplayed matches it’s a question of ‘Watch this space’.
In a round up of outstanding achievements Godalming A remained unbeaten in the Premier with Federico Viterbo unsurpassed in singles. Shaun Robertson was unbeaten in the Second Division. The Third Division saw Ash’s James Wyncoll lose only one match in his 97% in singles.
The association is sorry to report that Phil Knapp, the founder of the highly successful Challoner club, has recently died aged 89.
Members are urged to get their application for tickets for the annual presentation evening in as soon as possible numbers being strictly limited.
