Vincent Quiambao and Max Flint were unbeaten on day three of the National Cadet League as Guildford A became Division 2 champions and achieved promotion back to Division 1.
Guildford A’s first match was against Reading and they achieved a 5-1 win. Max and Vincent won all their matches 3-0. Owain Osmond-Gillam, completing the team, defeated Emma Ranson 3-1, but lost out 3-1 to Josh Sandland by the same score.
Next up was the Croydon outfit, Crusaders C. Vincent was up first against Daniyal Palmer, one of the strongest players in the division. In an incredibly close match, Vincent came through 11-7 in the fifth set in one of his best performances.
Buoyed by how well Vincent played, Max and Owain won their next matches in three straight sets to make the match score 3-0.
Max then went 2-0 up against Daniyal, but then lost a couple of deuce games to make the score 2-2.
It looked like Max would lose his first match when he went 8-3 down in the decider, but he dug deep and managed to find his earlier form to come back and win 11-9 in the fifth.
Vincent then won his closest match of the day 12-10 in the fifth against Abiram Mohan-Nagarajan, but Owain was not so fortunate – losing 13-11, 15-17, 11-9, 9-11, 5-11 to Akal Dosanjh to make the final score 5-1 to Guildford.
Guildford’s last two matches against Warren Spring B and Oxford B ended in impressive 6-0 victories. All but two matches were won 3-0, cementing their domination of the division.
Guildford B, competing in Division 3, were represented by Jamie Orton, Katie Snelson and Joss Beedie.
Contrastingly they found things a little tougher and ended up relegated to Division 4. Their best moments came against Chiltern C when Katie and Jamie came through a pair of five-setters to go 2-0 up.
However, that was as good as it got, as their opponents rattled off the next four matches to win 4-2.
Katie also added an impressive win against Francesca Preston of Warren Spring C. she lost the first two ends 11-9 11-3, but won the next three 11-5, 13-11, 11-7.
Despite losing their four team matches, the players were unlucky to lose many close four and five setters. They will aim to do better in Division 4 in the final round of NCL fixtures.
The next round of matches will be on March 24.
