Report by John Diggens

In the Guildford Table Tennis League this past week it’s all been happening in Division One.

Challoner, who have struggled at times this season, took pole position with a 6-4 victory over Godalming D. It was good to see Trevor Spraggs, who won a couple, back after a year away on business.

Merrow E, pacemakers for so long, only managed a draw against Cody being thwarted by three from Kin Chan.

College Hill B eased into third place with an unlikely 9-1 result against Bramley A. Taking three of the four matches that went to five sets helped them.

This puts the Bramley side back in the relegation mix together with Abinger A who suffered a 10-0 reverse against a rampant Godalming E outfit with, again, five setters dominating. Abinger lost all four matches that went the distance.

In the Fourth Division Bramley G, although recently defeating table toppers Merrow H, still lie in eighth position not improved by an 8-2 win over bottom team Godalming N.

Dick Nevitt got his accustomed three, while David Kemp opened his second half account with two. Ian Haywood replied with a couple.

Godalming P scored a good win over second placed Abinger by  6-4. Only 10 points now cover six teams in the battle for runners up spot behind ‘dead certs’ Merrow who took out Godalming M 9-1.

The Premier Division was fairly quiet with results slow to come in. There was, however, an interesting anomaly not, apparently, covered by association rules when both Burymead B and Merrow D turned up a player short no doubt necessitating heated committee discussions well into the night!

Richard Seymour in action.

Burymead A climbed into fourth place on the back of a 6-4 win over Merrow B. Mark Handcock, Tim Waller and Julie Lawrence all got braces. Richard Seymour replied similarly.

In Division Three Ash B momentarily roared to the top of the heap with a 10-0 drubbing of a two man Woking B.

Merrow G and Godalming J were at stalemate, although Fred Florence, still playing as well as ever despite the advancing years, got a maximum, two of them at deuce in the fifth. Amazing stamina!
