Guildford Junior League (Clausura) – Round 2
Two matches were played in round two of the Guildford Junior League (Clausura).
Top Spinners and VTC agreed to rearrange their fixture for a later date and the no-show of Christ’s College meant that their opponents, Merrow Hawks, claimed a 5-0 walkover win. As a result, the Hawks moved on to 10 points and sit top of the table at this early stage.
Merrow Demons moved into second place; they produced a strong showing against the Thunderbolts, winning 4-1.
Henry Evans got the Demons off to a good start against Kyle Kepa, winning 11-8 in the fourth. Tom Gartner followed up with a closely fought 11-8 in the fifth victory over Anton Kepa. Henry then completed his double with a 3-0 win over Anton, but then Kyle won the Thunderbolts’ first GJL match with an excellent 3-0 win over Tom.
The Demons made it 4-1 with another tight deciding set victory in the doubles. The Thunderbolts were unlucky to lose two 5-setters and ran the Apertura champions close.
The Overtakers lived up to their name by overtaking J2 in the table with a 4-1 win. Joe Sparkes starred with three 3-0 wins – against Joss Beedie and James Scott in the singles and then in combination with Andrei Cherciu in the doubles.
James played more aggressively against Andrei than he did against Joe and this approach paid dividends, resulting in him winning 3-0 and scoring his team’s only point of the evening.
