Report by John Diggens

This past week the Guildford Table Tennis League got down to the nitty gritty of league matters after the considerable excitement of the recent tournament.

In the Premier Division a local derby saw Merrow B defeat their Peers 6-4. A rampant Richard Seymour starred with a wonderful display of counter attacking play remaining unbeaten including the doubles.

A very focused Rob Pountney.

In a middle of the table clash Godalming B, fielding two players, got a great 6-4 victory over Merrow C. Young Charlie Cunningham, improving with every match, scored a superb maximum. Rob Pountney was also unbeaten.

Top young player Charlie Cunningham.

The First Division saw Aftermath A lift themselves clear of the relegation zone with an 8-2 win over fellow strugglers Abinger. Albert Cheung starred with Steve Pearce and Simon Turner giving good support.

Godalming H got a rather surprising 8-2 victory against College Hill C, considering their relative positions in Division Two. This put put a bit of a crimp in the Haslemere club’s promotion aspirations. Brian Mitchell led the charge ably backed up by Carsten Horne and Georgii Piskov.

Bramley stalwart Steve Palmer.

In Division Three, Bramley E consolidated their position at the top beating a good middle of the table Aftermath side 8-2. Steve Palmer and Kim Farminer went unscathed excepting for a rare loss in the doubles. It was nice to see Alan Osgood back to winning ways after an injury ridden period.

Bramley F scored bragging rights over the G side with a 7-3 win in their local derby. Richard Phelps, Mahboob Raza and David Barraclough carried the day in a very convivial evenings play.

Your correspondent, who played in this one has never seen, in 70 years of playing ping, more edge balls during the evening’s matches; a statistical anomaly!

There was much comment during the exchanges like: “Oh my word what an extremely fine edge ball, that was for the game I believe, the fourth this set. I wish I could do that.” Oh well swings and roundabouts!
