Report by John Diggens
This past week in the Guildford Table Tennis League Premier Division the two bottom clubs clashed.
College Hill A getting a much needed 7-3 success over Merrow C. Phil Harrison, Graham Nutting and Ady Mitchell all scored braces. Young Max Flint replied with two including a thrilling 15 in the fifth against Mitchell.
In Division One Merrow E got a fine 6-4 win over high flying Merrow D in their ‘local derby’with Steve Woodgate again starring.
A fascinating match was that between Abinger A and Godalming F in the lower regions of the Division. Brendan Bayley of the Village side had a great evening taking all his singles, two of them at 12 in the fifth and the doubles. In fact, Abinger won all four of the five setters in their 6-4 win.
Division Two and Bramley A continued on their merry way with a 9-1 score against Godalming J, although Geoff Nevitt, Peter Palmer and Ian Farley won all their singles curiously they were unable to nail down the doubles!
Division Three saw Bramley D soar to table top on the back of a 9-1 over Godalming K. It was nice to see Angela and Peter Coventry with Mark Lockyer in such good form. At this early stage they must be considered as potential champions.
The Guildford Table Tennis Association is delighted to announce the award, by Table Tennis England, of the prestigious Maurice Goldstein Merit Award for dedicated, sustained and exceptional services to table tennis, to two of its long serving members, Neil Harden and John Callcut. Well done Neil and John!
Guildford Table Tennis Association, represented by Max Flint, Nathan Tse and James Scott, participated in the National Junior League at Cippenham on October 19. Surprisingly as debutants, they were placed in the top division (out of four) and as a result found the going quite tough.
They faced Hillingdon, Warren Spring and Cippenham and lost 7-2, 7-2 and 8-1 respectively. Max was the only player who picked up victories.
He defeated Catalin Alcaz and Krushan Kri of Hillingdon, Arshbir Singh and Bruce Yao of Warren Spring, and William Saint of Cippenham. Nathan came closest to a victory against Arshbir Singh, losing 11-8 in the deciding end, while James played his best table tennis against Hillingdon, losing two tight matches against Alcaz and Kri.
The players had a great team spirit and learnt much from this experience. As a result of being placed in a higher division than they expected and playing a higher calibre of opponent, they came away with motivation to improve and work on aspects of their game for the next round of matches on November 23. Then they will face the remaining two teams in their division.
