Match of week three in the Guildford Table Tennis League was an exciting affair between Woking E and College Hill F in the Fourth Division.
In a five-all draw Mark Feiszt got three singles, although being taken to five sets in every one.
The Haslemere team were desperately unlucky losing a further match in five when Rick Clements lost to Slavico Ivanovic. Richard Abbey got two, winning in another five-setter against Ivanovic. In a change of club Ash stalwart, Margaret Thornton, got all three when turning out for new team Godalming N against their S side.
In the Premier, Merrow B reversed an indifferent start last week by beating College Hill A 8-2 with Graham Faulkner scoring a brilliant maximum including the doubles.
It was also nice to see veteran ace John Callcut back after a lay off with a perennial shoulder problem. He took two singles losing only to Gabriela Lee.
Ash A also came back strongly after their 10-0 drubbing, with a 7-3 result against Godalming C.
In an interesting clash Godalming A took out their B side 7-3 but a feature was Simon Vine defeating Adam Laws to take the Guildford Champion’s unbeaten record rather early this season.
Bramley B have got off to a disappointing start in Division Two with another big defeat this time against Aftermath C. by 9-1.
Steve Cheeseman saved the whitewash with a 11-9 victory in the fifth against Martin Strutt. Dave Wilson and Paolo Sala were in superlative form. I
ts Ash B though who are making the running with a crushing 9-1 result versus Godalming H. James Wyncoll continues to delight with his awkward spoiling game using his combination bat to good effect.
In Division Three Merrow F continued their good form with a 7-3 win over Bramley E; they sit atop the table.
Nice to see Challoner B bounce back this time after last week’s 10-0 reverse, they beat Abinger B 8-2 courtesy of a maximum from Chris Ray and a couple each from Ken Lemon and Alan Cumper.
Some sad news was the death of Alan Lewell of the Godalming club. Alan was simply a lovely man who had so much courage to meet what life threw at him, a real gentleman. He so loved his Ping, and it was a great privilege to have known him.
Interesting news from Malcolm Taylor, who older members may remember from the 1960s and 70s era, is that son Graham, another name from the past, whom I played with regularly in the 1980s, has just started to play again and has been selected for the Northamptonshire Vets side.
