Unsung heroes from across Surrey and North East Hampshire were honoured this week (November 28) at the annual BBC Surrey Community Heroes Awards for 2016 at the Gatwick Crowne Plaza Hotel.

The first Outstanding Achievement Award was presented to an unsuspecting Diana Roberts, tourism marketing & development manager for ‎Guildford Tourist Information Centre who was said to go more than the extra mile in promoting both Guildford and the whole of Surrey.

Diana said: “Winning the award came as a complete surprise – but I am flattered and delighted, and feel rather unworthy compared to all the other amazing people who won on the night”

Some specially invited guests were in attendance to hand over the awards. They included the Surrey-based entertainers Lionel Blair, Colin Blunstone and David Hamilton, and the High Sheriff of Surrey Richard Whittington.

Commenting on the Awards, Mark Carter, BBC Surrey Acting Managing Editor said, ‘The Community Heroes Awards is always a fantastic celebration of unsung heroes from across the region and last night was no exception. This was our sixth year of these awards and the stories we heard were incredible. We also received more nominations than ever before so all finalists should feel extremely proud of their achievements’.

The ceremony will be aired on BBC Surrey FM/Online/DAB this Sunday , December 4 at 4pm and Tuesday,  December 27 at 6pm. For the first time, it will also be shown on Latest TV on Tuesday 6th December at 4pm, available online at www.thelatest.co.uk

Great news. My congratulations to Diana on this award. She is always there to help when ever we need it with our bowls club events in the Castle Grounds.

Regards from all the members of Castle Green Bowling Club and most of all from me.

Fantastic and doesn’t she ever deserve it? Her inspiration and unstinting support in motivating tourism in Guildford leaves many of us floundering in her wake.

She is always available, somehow, in person, online or at end of the phone to help to promote this great town, the many venues and events held here. Her advice is invaluable.

Congratulations to her and all the team at the Tourist Information Centre from all of us at The Spike.
