Winter arrived across Guildford and the South East this morning with snow falling at first light.

The usual heavy rush hour traffic in and out of Guildford did not appear to have been affected too much as a result of the freezing conditions. However, there were delays on the A3 southbound between Burnt Common at Send and Burpham due to a broken-down bus on the A3100 London Road near Winterhill Way.

There was also an accident on the A246 Epsom Road near East Clandon.

This morning the Met Office’s latest forecast was warning of the risk of icy patches as rain clears south during the day. Some sleet and snow is likely too, with a risk of accumulations in places. Sunshine will develop during the afternoon, but with an isolated wintry shower possible over Kent. There will be a cold northerly breeze.

The forecast for later is for mostly clear skies this evening that overnight will allow a sharp frost to form. There will be a risk of icy patches forming too, especially on untreated surfaces.

Guildford Borough Council tweeted around 9am that no schools had informed it that they were closing due to the weather.

Is this the start of a good deal cold and snowy weather ahead? In The Guildford Dragon News’s Birdwatcher’s Diary column back in October, Malcolm Fincham, a keen observer of natural history and the countryside, reported that he had a gut feeling that we will be in for a hard winter…..
