Tickets are now available to see 24 University of Surrey academics speak at pubs across Guildford, as part of the “world’s largest festival of public science talks”.

Thousands of scientists across 21 countries and 300 cities will be taking part in the three-day Pint of Science festival, May 14 to 16, by taking to the stage at local venues to speak about their research. The festival will include talks, demonstrations, and live experiments, as well as a chance for members of the public to ask the scientists about their work.

The Pint of Science festival, hosted by the University of Surrey, is taking place at a number of Guildford pubs from May 14 to 16.

In Guildford, talks on a variety of topics will take place at pubs across the town, including the Boileroom (May 14 and 15), the Star (May 14 to 16), the Weyside (May 16) and Ye Olde Ship Inn (May 14 to 16). Tickets for each evening cost £4 and can be purchased from the Pint of Science website here: pintofscience.co.uk

The talks in Guildford will be on a variety of topics including The Secret Science of Superheroes and The Psychology of Dieting.

Alongside the main talks, each evening will also include a range of science-inspired activities including live experiments, comedy, quizzes, games, and puzzles.

Ross Kelway, public engagement manager at the University of Surrey, said: “We are incredibly excited to be hosting our own Pint of Science Festival in Guildford pubs again this year.

“We have pulled together our best ever programme with all sorts of interesting, exciting and thought provoking talks from some of our leading academics and researchers on a variety of subjects, some incredibly topical with all that’s going on in the world right now. This is a unique annual event not to be missed right here in Guildford”.

Pint of Science was established six years ago by a group of UK-based post-graduate and post-doctoral researchers and has since become one of the world’s biggest science festivals. It aims to bring scientists out of the lab to engage the public with their work and give people a chance to “meet the people responsible for the future of science”.

Festival co-founder, Dr Praveen Paul, said: “There is so much fascinating research happening right under our noses that we don’t know about.

“Some can get lost in translation leading to fake news. Pint of Science allows people direct access to inspiring scientists and encourages open discussion, all in the most familiar of British places, the pub! Scientists drink pints too – they really aren’t that different!”

Talks will be taking place in over 30 cities across the UK, including Bath, Bristol, Durham, London, Oxford, Portsmouth, Reading, and Southampton.
