Ducks in Millmead were in their element today (July 24) as heavy rain, accurately forecast by the BBC weathermen, fell on Guildford for most of the day.
Their forecast had been: “Areas of rain, often heavy, and strengthening winds will cross much of southern England today (Friday), persisting overnight in the east, before clearing on Saturday morning”
But there appeared to be few problems with even localised flooding as the local drain system was heavily tested. The river Wey, after weeks of minimal precipitation, seemed to be coping easily and an environment agency website showed that the river level at 3.45pm today (July 24) was still a metre below flood level.
There is an average of 27mm rainfall for Guildford in July but today alone might have upset that figure. At 4.30pm the rain was falling at a rate of 8-16mm per hour.
But it is not all bad news – gardeners might be pleased of a good soak, our village greens parks and pitches will be green again and there not likely to be even a whisper of a hose pipe ban.

It sure did ‘fait pleut’.
The water level in a 4ft long plastic dog bed that had been left out at the back of the house measured 40mm.
