Merrow Bowls Club report by David Raison

On what must have been the hottest day of the year so far (Saturday, May 5), Merrow welcomed Horsell Bowls Club to our green.

We played four rinks of triples, with high hopes of a good match.

The green had been improved since our last match against Liphook, and we were quite positive. However, the gods were not with us, as we went down 45 – 87, losing on all four rinks. Still, it was a good-natured match, and I’m sure everyone enjoyed the day.

Superb weather for a game of bowls!

It was not all bad news though. Rink 1 had been leading for much of their match, eventually losing by four points. Well done Mark and David E for a storming performance (your correspondent was also on this rink but can’t claim any credit). Rink 3 also saw a fine performance by Merrow, again losing by just four points. Well done Mike M, Allen M and Bob C.

Relaxing in the sunshine.

In the words of D:Ream, “things can only get better”.

Burpham Bowling Club report by Ian Mackrell

Our first outdoor fixture on Sunday, April 29, was 100% oversubscribed – such keenness must indicate the club is in good health.

We hosted Ottershaw in a four triples match, with Burpham coming out winners 64-54.

Captain Alan Mogg decided to arrange a friendly for the 12 home players not selected – and they had a fantastic fun afternoon.

Our next visitors, Windlesham, on Wednesday, May 2, could only raise 11 players for a 5 triples match – and with the heavens opening, captain Alan Mogg sensibly called the match off.

Glenda Mogg, fully concentrated.

By the weekend the weather had improved – and on Saturday, May 5, Mayford Hall suffered the same fate as other visitors this season – beaten 113-71!

Captains Carole Baker (Mayford Hall) and Alan Mogg (Burpham).

The green was playing extremely well – a good thing as serious external competitions are almost upon us – and both are against Egham, one of Surrey’s top teams.

On Sunday, May 6, yet another visiting team, Ewhurst, suffered a 84-61 defeat.

On both Saturday and Sunday it was particularly nice to see home, and away, supporters enjoying the lovely weather, and the competitive bowls.

At last some refreshments and a good laugh had by all.
