Morrow Bowls Club report by David Raison

On Sunday, February 18, Merrow bowlers played their final indoor fixture of the 2017-18 season.

Morrow playing Burpham at the Wey Valley Indoor Bowls Club, Stoke Park, Guildford.

We played six rinks of triples against Burpham over 18 ends, with Merrow coming out on top with a score of 113 – 94.

In addition, Merrow won on three rinks, drew one and lost two. Considering that most of the Merrow side have only been playing indoors for one season, the result was a testament to their prowess.

Our top rink was rink one with Sally W, Lorna R, and David E, who had a resounding victory. Very well done to each of you.

Wey Valley provided the teams with tea and cake at half-time, followed at full-time by a beef casserole, vegetables and roast potatoes, and profiteroles to finish. Thanks to Nicky, Tracey and Alesha for the catering, and to Robert behind the bar.

The next time we meet Burpham will be an outdoor match (at home) on May 26.

Merrow Bowls Club is holding a jumble sale on Saturday, April 7, to raise funds.

It takes place at Merrow Village Hall, Epsom Road, Guildford GU1 2QY. Entry at 8.30am is £5, and 50p from 10am.

Castle Green Bowling Club report by Ann Lewis

Castle Green Bowling Club starts its lawn bowls season at the end of April and continues through to the end of September in the beautiful grounds of Guildford Castle.

Lawn bowls is an age-old sport for all ages from around 12 years old on up, with some players well into their eighties. Coaching and spare bowls are provided for newcomers, and the first year fee is half price (£37.50).

It helps if you have played some other ball sport. Apart from that all you need is a good eye, the ability to bend and stretch, the stamina to last through a three-hour long game, and a pair of flat-soled shoes to protect the green.

Friendly games are usually played mid-week or on Saturdays or Sundays against local clubs, but there are higher level competitions as well, both between local clubs and within the club itself, if you are interested.

Castle Green Bowling Club.

Good players even get to compete at the county level. It’s a great old English game, not too strenuous, cheap to play compared with most other sports, and providing great company.
We often find ourselves playing to music when the Castle Ground’s bandstand is in use.

Coaching nights for newcomers are Mondays at 6pm. There will be an open day for beginners and others from 2pm to 7pm on Wednesday, May 2, and fun evenings for beginners between 4pm and 6pm pm on Mondays May 7, 14, 21 and 31. Roll up and try it!
