Castle Green Bowling Club, report by Patrick Andrew
Eleven members of the Haagse Bowls Club from The Hague, Holland, visited Guildford’s Castle Green Bowling Club on Tuesday, August 22.
They came to us after spending the morning shopping for new bowling equipment at the Bowlswear Direct shop by Stoke Park, and some of their newly bought equipment was put to use in their afternoon match with us.
Three triples matches were played between the two clubs, 12 ends played in two series of 6 ends each, with some team adjustments at the half way stage to make sure everyone had a go.
Members of Haagse Bowls Club normally play on an artificial surface at home, and for several of them this was the first time they had played on grass.
Rain threatened for a while, but held off; the green was in sparkling conditio and a great time was had by all, with very little attention being paid to the score!
The match was followed by a nice cup of tea and some cakes, rounding off a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.
Merrow Bowls Club, report by David Raison
On Saturday, August 26, Merrow visited Burpham for our return match. When we played Burpham at Merrow, we had a very good win and were hoping to repeat that success.
On a very hot afternoon, four teams of triples were in action. The onlookers certainly had an enjoyable time as the scores mounted.
Sadly for Merrow, Burpham won on three of the four rinks, with an overall score of 66-59, a winning margin of just 7 points.
Special mentions go to Sue, Debbie and Brian, who came back from an 11 point deficit to finish only 2 points down, and to Mark, David and Rodney, who won by a very respectable 6 points.
