Guildford YMCA’s 32nd Prince’s Trust Team came to a successful conclusion last week. And thanks to the Harlequins rugby team they celebrated in style at the Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel.

Members of the Prince’s Trust Team with leaders Diana and Dan, both on the left front and back rows, and Mark Soden from Harlequins, back row, right.

The young people’s presentation to family, friends and supporters was a moving occasion.

The 12 week self-development course takes young people who have nothing to do and little hope for the future and turns them around. Personal and team challenges stretch the young people who inevitably find they can achieve much more than they thought possible. They form strong friendships as they work together to achieve tasks and help develop each other as well as themselves.

During the presentation Sam and Charlotte paid moving tributes to Diana and Dan, the Plantation youth workers who have steered the young people through the course. Sam said: “You’ve taught us team work, loyalty and friendship which has made us become stronger as a team. You helped us overcome the obstacles we faced along the way and, thanks to you both, we are better people.”

Charlotte added: “You are both truly inspirational people. Doing this course has given me a reason to get up in the morning with something positive to look forward to every day. I understand now how much hard work it is getting all of us awkward teenagers motivated to do things.  I will never forget this special time in my life.”

Mark Soden, player development manager of the Harlequins rugby club, congratulated the young people on all they have achieved. He said, “There’s nothing more inspiring than seeing young people face challenges in their lives and overcome them.  Our players are well paid, well looked after and they work hard yet they have learnt so much from their time with these young people. It’s good for them to see these young people and what they deal with.”

He also thanked the Radisson Hotel for its generous support.
