Report by Ian Mackrell

We continued to face the challenges of freezing temperatures, biting cold wind and horrendous downpours – and still smile, well just!

All wrapped up against the elements on Saturday May 4 at Burpham.

On Saturday, May 4, we were delighted to host our friends from Mayford Hall to a friendly game of five triples.

Burpham managed to outscore our guests on all five rinks and ran out worthy winners by a huge margin.

And can you believe it – as soon as we stopped playing the sun came out, the sky turned blue, and the light was just stunning. All far too late for 30 wet and grumpy bowlers.

The tea served after the match, combined with both hot drinks and alcoholic refreshments too, went down a treat.

The following day was Open Day at Burpham. The banners on both the Aldi and Sainsbury’s roundabouts, and the local media brought quite a good public attendance at our “come and have a go” free trial. Yes, it was still cold, but no, it didn’t rain.

All five of our qualified coaches were on hand, together with many members of the Club, to show prospective players the ropes. And, we managed to gain quite a few members straight away, with others coming for a second session on Thursday, May 8.

Many thanks to Keith Sutton and his volunteers for a great effort. Your hard work has paid off.

In the afternoon we hosted Ewhurst Bowling Club for a four-rink friendly. As the open day had only finished an hour before the start of this match, most of our senior players took a well earned rest.

The match was played in cold, but not bitterly cold, conditions. Our guests just eased the match their way, but the hospitality we offered after the match was probably the highlight of the afternoon.Again hot drinks and alcoholic beverages were liberally consumed with the excellent food brought in by club captain Alan Mogg.
