Letter: A Guildford 14th-Century Heritage Site Saved For the Use of the People

Great Barn, Wanborough

From: Stephen Callender

Chairman, Wanborough Barns Management CommitteeIn response to: Borough Council Challenged to Make the Most of Town’s Heritage

In support of the GBC Asset Team (reference Burchatts Farm Barn), we have successfully negotiated a long-term lease with them for a fabulous wedding reception (and funeral wake) venue.

We manage the building and pay for running costs and maintenance, as well as contributing to repairs. GBC handle maintenance and repairs as required.
This is a fine outcome for a 14th-century building that remains a historic heritage asset still open to the people and managed by a great group of local volunteers.
The council are to be congratulated on working with us to achieve this and I commend them for their far-sightedness.

This is brilliant news. Are there caterers that can be recommended? Where do we go to hire the wonderful barn?

Stephen Callender and his Management Committee certainly showed a level of professionalism and confidence that enabled political buy-in for a successful future for Warnborough Barns. Heritage and culture has to remain of paramount importance in our borough.

Paul Spooner is a Conservative ‘independent’ borough councillor for Ash South & Tongham.
