Letter: Bill and Doreen Had the Whole Town At Heart

Bill and Doreen Bellerby in 1995 when they were jointly made Honorary Freemen of the Borough of Guildford.

From Graham Collyer

Former editor of the Surrey Advertiser

My wife and I had the pleasure of knowing Bill and Doreen throughout the 1980s and 1990s when I was with the Surrey Advertiser, much of the time as editor. They were a wonderful, friendly couple, Labour through and through, of course, but with the whole of the town at heart.

They genuinely cared for everyone. I often had a front row seat to know that statement was true.

We have many happy memories of being in their company. We remember them, too, for their love of walking and of the time we bumped into them on a coastal path on the Isle of Wight. As always, there was time for a chat before we went our separate ways.

A remarkable couple who gave their energy and support to so many individuals, groups and organisations in Guildford. What an example to us all.
