Letter: Bus Station Survey Puts Cart Before the Horse

Guildford Bus Station

From Jim Allen

In response to: Guildford Bus Users Demand a Better Bus Station

The bus station survey conducted by the Guildford Labour Party puts the cart before the horse. What is actually needed is a borough-wide survey asking people to consider where they want to travel to on a daily basis to assess bus routes required. It is no good asking only bus users they already use the buses.

Then, once this has been ascertained, plan the routes. Then, and only then, plan the bus stops.

There is only one place a bus 15 minute “resting place” is required, at the railway station This would allow drop off, from the outlying locations, and wait for return pick up to outlying locations; everywhere else only requires bus stops. Until this base principle is fully understood we will not find a good solution. Calls for new bus stations and modal shift show a distinct lack of understanding of how integrated public transport works.

I agree with Jim Allen, fancy asking existing users. It is the non-users that you need to survey.
