Letter: Council Has Displayed Sheer Incompetence Over Chantries Campsite

Chantries Camp Site

From Nils Christiansen

In response to: Councillors Told ‘Take a Good Look at Yourselves’ Over Chantry Wood Fiasco

Another complete shambles.

When I pointed out at the Executive meeting on Thursday (March 7, 2019) that by leasing the campsite the council was effectively privatising it, with very little consultation or clarity over the terms of the lease (term, demise, etc), I was told I was playing politics.

Then when Cllr Jackson pointed out that it was true, the Executive decided that when they had agreed in January to lease the campsite to a private operator, they actually meant not to lease it.

Sheer incompetence. You couldn’t make it up.

It does seem to me that this is being blown out of all proportion. It was conceded at the Executive meeting that the comms in relation to the campsite could have been better, but the overall intention has always been clear and I would like to pay tribute to the excellent officers in our Countryside Team who do a fantastic job of managing 50 countryside sites comprising nearly 700 hectares. I would suggest our time could be better spent going out and enjoying them!

I will second that, it is absolutely true, you had to be there to believe it, but there is the webcast for those who wish to view for themselves.

It is a worry that our council don’t recognise the difference between a lease and a licence. Or do they?

They were caught in the act of disposing of the campsite by a few regular campers, and it doesn’t stop there… the same council are trying to get rid of Burchett’s Farm Barn too – just the same – they want to lease it out commercially.

Must we register all our Community Assets to protect them from the very people who we are paying to care for them?

    It’s sad.
