Letter: Incinerating Unnecessary Packaging Causes Pollution

In response to: Aldi Encouraging Recycling with a Children’s Poster Competition

Recycling is not a bad thing but it would be so much better if the supermarkets and manufacturers put effort into not creating the packaging in the first place.

I regularly see lots of food from Aldi unnecessarily wrapped in plastic which could be easily removed.

A recent investigation showed that 60 per cent of the soft plastic taken to large supermarkets to recycle was actually incinerated. Given waste incineration is now the UK’S most polluting form of energy generation after the last coal fired power station closed, companies promoting recycling as the answer to children are severely misguided.
