Letter: Increased Distance Between Voters and Elected Bodies Diminishes Influence

In response to: SCC Leader Seeking Postponement of County Council Elections to Focus on Devolution

Surely, the correct way to determine whether or not the voters of Surrey want devolution is to hold an election and for candidates to major on this issue.

I shall resist the temptation to put a personal viewpoint other than to remark that, in my view, the greater the distance of voters from the elected bodies the less influence voters will have in what happens within their communities.

An early election might be thought a manifestation of democracy, whereas a delayed one is an indication of a lack of it.

If a vote can be delayed by a year on the whim of those elected then why not two years, or ten, or that old favourite “for life”. It’s a bad precedent and one which they must not be allowed to set.
