Letter: New Police Advice Regarding Calls for Assistance Is Worrying

From Monica Jones

The news reported in the article Policing Matters Campaign Relaunched To Help Public When Making Calls) is worrying. It is almost impossible to contact a community safety person for some services that were previously dealt with by the police. It appears that they are no longer office based and now work “in the community”.

When I wished to report something I phoned the number I’d found for the person who serviced my area; the answering service informed me he was unwell. I tried again after a few days to be told he was now on leave.

I phoned GBC who tried to put me through to the supervisor who was “not available”. I was given his number to try later, which I did. I reached his answer service and was asked to leave my number and I would be contacted. This never happened. The problem still exists.

I appreciate this is as a result of police and local government financial restraints and lack of resources but I feel it is wrong to claim to have services that really don’t exist.
