Letter: New Station Layout Offers No Improvement

Published on: 27 Oct, 2019

From Angela Gunning

Labour borough councillor for Stoke

Looking at the drawings (application 14/P/02168) for the forecourt, in the original application, it’s the same-old, same-old layout. No original thinking for improved traffic management. Plus a “public square”  listed as an area for outside eating. Oh please!

Well over three-quarters of the space in front of the station is still for taxis, cars and buses.

Also, I see that there are now actually steps proposed for the station entrance, there are none at the moment, so you can lug your cases to the head of the rank on the level. In the new layout, you will have to bump them down the steps as well!

On Friday (October 25), at 6pm, station traffic was completely grid-locked; it took 30 minutes to leave the station. I don’t see this layout improving anything.

It doesn’t seem like this proposal is intended to improve anything except the developers bank balance.

It’s very odd that this development apparently meets with almost universal disapproval yet there is no means of stopping it.

We could say exactly the same about the disastrous Tory Local Plan, although the new Lib Dem regime have done everything maintain it, and nothing to review it, despite the election promises form most of them.

Typical, not thinking and applying logic in planning. It will make it difficult to hump cases.

The GBC should take steps to safeguard a new route to link York Road to Guildford Park Road and be prepared to compulsory purchase the required part of the Solum site. In this way, the whole of the town centre can become car-free as it will allow the closure of Bridge Street and Onslow Street to all traffic except buses, taxis and the disabled. In a stroke, the town centre would have less traffic, less noise, less pollution, more room for trees, people, cyclists and greater access to the riverside.
