Letter: Perhaps We Should Worry More about What is Below Our Wheels Than Above Our Heads?

One of the potholes on Ben Darnton’s route near the Royal Surrey County Hospital.

From: Ben Darnton

With the GBC election looming it is understandable that currently we are concentrating on borough council issues but I have a gripe about a county council responsibility.

Have any other Dragon readers noticed the increasingly appalling state of our local roads or am I the only one?

I have worked in Guildford for 39 years and have mixed my daily commute in and out on two and four wheels, over this time.

Another example of the poorly maintained road surface by King’s College School.

During lockdown, I purchased a second-hand electric bike and that made my journeys more enjoyable and saved me time and money as well as giving the obvious health benefits, even on our gridlocked roads.

Recently I have started driving in towards Guildford halfway then cycling the remainder because our potholed and rutted roads have become too dangerous for cyclists.

Perhaps we should worry more about what’s at ground level rather than the height of the proposed new developments hopefully going ahead soon in Guildford?

Just don’t read the article on what these people are paid – it will make your head explode.

The roads are terrible around here, and so is the Surrey County Council pothole reporting tool. I noticed that particular half-football size crater you photographed near the Royal Surrey Hospital as I cycled past it yesterday.

When I tried to report it through the SCC highway issue page on their website it said the hole was reported on 15th February this year and they would be “scheduling a repair within 7 days [of the 15th February]”… When I tried to report it again, the website reported an error, as it has done the last three times I’ve tried.

At the start and end of the day, the roads are gridlocked with cars, but what else can Guildfordians do? Right now you have to be brave and hyper-vigilant if you want to cycle anywhere in Guildford.

I’ve driven on better roads in Africa.

We are turning into a third-world nation as a result of Surrey County Council’s failure to take action on potholes.

Where I live they have filled in a pothole on a bridge 12 times! I can only assume that the SCC use contractors who don’t give a damn about the quality of workmanship.

Also, what is our local MP doing to redress the problem?
