Letter: SCC Should Drop the Dead Donkey

In response to: 5 Things We Learned from Guildford Road Closure Meeting

Cllr Oliver has remarked that it would be madness to carry on with this scheme against huge opposition to the planned works on London Road. However, there is apparently to be a further period of “consultation”.

The cost of further consultation will undoubtedly be considerable, what will it achieve that hasn’t already been made obvious from the strength of feeling clearly manifested at the public meeting this week.

One could not achieve a better consultation exercise. A wide cross-section of the community took the time and trouble to leave their homes and businesses to attend and in the strongest terms said “no” to this scheme.

SCC, must waste no more time nor taxpayers’ money on trying to resuscitate this dead donkey.

It is not just the cost of the consultation but the delay to the scheme that is unfortunate, missing an opportunity to reduce congestion in the long term by enabling an alternative to short car journeys.

Considering that the vast majority did not cycle to the meeting and struggled to park, shows how important it is that a safe cycle lane is provided.
