Letter: The Council Leader Should Not Claim to Speak for the Majority

Local Plan Part 2

In response to: Local Plan Part 2 Moves to Next Stage, Despite Environmental Concerns

Council Leader Joss Bigmore [R4GV, Christchurch] certainly does not speak for me and he cannot claim to know what the “majority of the borough” is thinking.

It is almost, but not quite, as bad as the views of the Tories, which is a shame as some of the R4GV (Residents for Guildford and Villages) councillors are much better.

It is very sad that politicians (including councillors) are happy to declare a Climate Change Emergency in order to look good and then put their heads back in the sand.

Meanwhile, developers are favouring profit over climate change mitigation and our planning department is supporting them. We all need a roof over our heads but it will not be of much use on an uninhabitable planet.

I agree and when developers are challenged about profit over climate change mitigation their stock answer is that they are implementing what GBC ask for.

Wake up Guildford – the planning department should mandate the maximum possible requirements in all buildings to mitigate climate change. For goodness sake, it is a Climate Emergency we are dealing with here.

The very least that Guildford could do is make sure all buildings built from now on have the highest possible standards in that regard.

Lead the way, not kowtow to developers and politics.
