Letter: This Lib Dem Election Newsletter is Untruthful – Error or Deliberate Misinformation?

Published on: 6 Nov, 2019

From Brian Creese

Guildford Labour Spokesperson

Through The Guildford Dragon NEWS, I would like to ask Zoe Franklin, the Guildford Lib Dem candidate in the general election, to explain the leaflet her party is distributing?

In it, as can be seen, she claims that only the Lib Dems, “Will give you the final say” on Brexit.

She must know that a) the Lib Dems will not give people the final say as, if they are able to form a government, they plan to revoke Article 50 regardless of the referendum result, and b) Labour will hold a second referendum, specifically to ensure the people do have the final say.

Was this an error or a deliberate piece of misinformation? This casual attitude towards the truth is very troubling on a personal level as well.

I and other Labour colleagues have been central to the local Remain group Guildford & Woking in Europe for the past four years and arguably Labour’s Campaign lead, Sue Hackman, has done more to drive the Remain cause in Guildford than anyone else.

I have rarely seen Zoe at our meetings or on our regular street events campaigning for Remain, yet now it seems she is falsely claiming to be the candidate for the only party who will give voters the final say.

This is disgraceful and I would really like to hear how she justifies this untruthful leaflet.

It seems the Lib Dems are playing dirty in this election campaign. They are already well known for inaccurate bar charts but are taking their distortions to a whole new level.

I could be wrong, but I have yet to see the parliamentary Labour party backing a second referendum. Yes, in the event that the party wins a majority, they say they will try to negotiate yet another deal and propose a referendum. Is it still the case that the party plans to campaign against their own negotiated deal in that referendum?

I think we can be forgiven for being somewhat confused by the Labour position on this.

It seems the Lib Dems just can’t help themselves from producing misleading election leaflets. That same leaflet also states “The Conservatives want a damaging No Deal Brexit”. Whereas the Conservative election web site states “on day one of a new Parliament we will start the process to Get Brexit Done with the New Deal that the Prime Minister has already agreed with the EU”.

I suppose we shouldn’t be too surprised as their party leader Jo Swinson tried to defend another of their misleading leaflet graphics on the Ridge on Sunday TV program at the weekend.

And just today, Jo Swinson has been caught out with another generic election leaflet attributing quotes to The Guardian, which were in fact made by herself!

So many unfortunate errors or deliberate misinformation?

I don’t think that there is any confusion here. Labour’s position is very clear and so is that of the Lib Dems. This leaflet misrepresents both, and is the latest in a whole string of publications from them that treat truth and accuracy as an inconvenience.

What we, the electorate, need to remember is that we had our say on the EU in 2016 and voted to leave the EU. That was a democratic decision which in a truly democratic country should be accepted by everyone, especially those elected to represent the people.

The Liberal Democrats have shown they are more akin to the Stalinist dictatorship by totally ignoring the will of the people. The Labour party are split and could not be trusted to make a decision, so the uncertainty would continue.

Nigel Farage cannot be trusted to stay with the Brexit Party after the vote. Remember what happened with UKIP.

The choice is now with us voters, Leave under the Conservatives, uncertainty under Labour or dictatorship under the Lib Dems.

I will choose democracy every time.

Mr Shatwell says he will choose democracy every time. So what is wrong with putting the question back to the electorate now that we know so much more about Brexit?

The Brexit Nirvana that was promised by Johnson, Farage, Rees Mogg and company, with exaggerated statements about saving money that would be diverted to the NHS or a Brexit road to riches, is clearly not forthcoming. People now have access to the publication of specialist reports and a real withdrawal agreement to scrutinise.

It would be the honest thing to put that agreement to the electorate in what really would be a democratic exercise. Not the 2016 Referendum, with its crass Yes/No answer to a complex question, and which Leave marginally won because many vulnerable people were duped by the above-mentioned posh boys.

If Leave were to win a new referendum, no-one could complain any further, and Mr Shatwell would be happy.

I would never vote for a Lib Dem, as long as the partly at local council level supports the disastrous Tory Local Plan. This plan, devised by a councillor later convicted, cannot be trusted, and nor can any councillor who supports it.

What we, the electorate, need to remember is we were asked to partake in an advisory, non-binding referendum in which the campaigners broke the law, and have been fined as a result.

Nevertheless, the government have done their best to take that referendum result forward through the minefield of various undeliverable promises made.

The huge changes to the picture emerging during this process have been debated, rightly, by our democratic representatives, our MPs, in the House of Commons. This is consistent with how our democracy works (even though the government wanted to deny them this right).

So much has changed since 2016. We now have a clear idea of what Leave might mean, even if the various negotiated deals have differed in detail. Since the referendum genie has been let out of the bottle by David Cameron, plunging us into this chaos, let’s now confirm this with another referendum.

Disappointed not to have received an apology from Zoe Franklin as yet. She is probably busy.

Interesting how the Lib Dems are deafeningly silent about fighting for proportional representation, contrary to what they always championed historically. But why would they want PR when they believe they have a chance at power?

They are brazenly anti democratic, hypocritical and not to be trusted – full stop.

It’s a very poor leaflet overall giving no good information about what policies, if any, the Liberal Democrats will stand by. I hope that hiding behind straightforward untruths isn’t going to be their only offer to the electorate.

Can they, at least, make it clear to the electorate that they just didn’t get this right.

The Liberal Democrat’s once again proving to untrustworthy with the electorate, and this is a lie plain and simple.

When will Zoe Franklin apologise for this?
