Letter: We Need to Remember Where the Blame for the Local Plan Lies

In response to: We Have a Practical Plan for the Local Plan

Call me old fashioned, but I believe it is wrong for councillors, as public servants, to launch media attacks on private residents, who are their electors and paymasters.

Nor do I believe that any resident who doesn’t fancy standing for election should be called an “armchair warrior” and have their opinions belittled as “easy accusations” and “cheap criticisms.” Such behaviour typifies what is wrong with Britain’s decayed local democracy, with its pompous little “Councillor Bumbles” lording it over decent folk.

In my view, Cllr Anderson and Mr Cranwell are both on the side of the angels on the Local Plan, and have worked hard, each in his own way, to get it revised.

If other R4GV councillors were less mesmerised by their Town Centre Masterplan and actually did something to help the “Villages” in their party name, we would make more progress. But we need to remember that the true blame lies with the Tories and their Lib Dem accomplices and make sure they are never again in a position to run the council.

I would add that it is somewhat unfair to level such accusations at one who has taken the trouble, expense, and considerable personal risk, to take the council to the high court with a judicial review, over a matter they feel passionate about.

Some of us may feel we can accomplish more outside the constraints of local government. Personally, I agree with Groucho Marx’s view that I should never join a club that would have someone like me in it.
