From: Richard Mills
Conservative borough councillor for Castle Ward
May I draw your readers’ attention to an initial survey being undertaken by concerned residents and myself with the support of my fellow Castle Ward councillors, Conservative and R4GV, on the risks to safety from the increasing volume and speed of traffic on Epsom Road?
We have been concerned in particular by comments from elderly residents who have to cross the road to the only accessible doctors and dentists’ surgeries and pharmacies, and from parents of children having to walk or cycle across the road to schools also concentrated on one side of the road.
At present, there are no pedestrian crossings between Boxgrove Road and Waterden Road and a 30 mph limit which is consistently ignored.
Before pressing Surrey County Council further on the issue we need to know the views of residents more generally on whether action is now needed and the form it should take – whether additional crossings, a 20 mph limit or both, or a comprehensive movement scheme of the kind proposed by SCC for London Road.
We have delivered letters to some 400 residents in the immediate area to seek their views and suggestions, but we recognise that residents elsewhere in the borough who regularly drive down or across Epsom Road also have an interest.
We would therefore be grateful if anyone we have not consulted who has experience or views on the issue would send their comments to Sam Neatrour who is leading the initiative (samneatrour@gmail.com) or, if they would prefer to discuss the matter, call me on 07961 720730.
