former Conservative leader of GBC
In response to: Highly Regarded Joint Strategic Director Quits Guildford & Waverley Councils
Where is the openness and transparency at GBC?
Why is one strategic director still on enforced “voluntary” paid leave for eight weeks or more without any action except the original poorly worded borough council release confirming the investigation was progressing while the two strategic directors were effectively on gardening leave?
This whole episode is a disgrace and a casual observer can only conclude that the current Lib Dem leadership has lost control of the council.
Who is running the council now? External investigators? Council officers?
It certainly isn’t the elected councillors.

We do not need any lessons on openness or transparency from Mr Spooner. His regime thrust through a disastrous Local Plan in the dying days of their leadership.
We will never know what was discussed on the occasions he received hospitality from developers, as he registered at the time, while this ruinous plan was being developed.
All we do know is that we now have a plan which is a developers’ charter, and ruined infrastructure in our villages so cruelly robbed their green belt protection.

If local Lib Dem councillors and Conservative councillors really are both so bad (which I query), should we have Labour or Peace Party councillors instead, or perhaps could we have people without party affiliations who are just keen to get on and do the job as best they can?
Whatever, let’s keep local elections separate from Parliamentary elections and vote for the best candidates in each election.
Actually the only local election coming up soon in Guildford is for Police and Crime Commissioner. So far I’ve only had advice from one source (Lib Dem) about whom to vote for, who sounds quite a good candidate, not wanting to push his party but just do the job while it exists and someone needs to do it.
Editor’s response: We have interviewed all four PCC candidates and the first interview will be published later today, the other three on subsequent days.
