Letter: I Will Not Vote Conservative in the Next Local Election

Published on: 14 Sep, 2017

Cllr Reeve at yesterday’s hearing.

From Colin Bell

The thing that really concerns me is the fact that we are still not being given the truth about the data on which the housing numbers are being calculated. The workings behind this number need to be in the public domain.

Cllr Reeve is absolutely correct in attempting to air these. The reaction of the council leadership smacks of desperate measures to do anything to cover these up.

Guildford residents should hold this council to account and hopefully will remember how we are being taken as mugs at the ballot box. As a Conservative voter all my life I will not vote Conservative in the next council election and I hope many others will follow this path.

    Well done Colin Bell.

I was also a lifetime Tory supporter until the regrettable Juneja affair was glossed over by the GBC Executive.

I won’t say “never again”, but certainly not while the current regime is in charge.

Have they learned nothing from the Juneja, Mansbridge, and “Bloody Rabble” affairs?

Party labels in local politics hide the ability of candidates to serve the community.

We once had independent councillors who were voted in on merit.

Having followed with interest the reported proceedings against Cllr Reeve, I am so appalled at the actions of GBC and the ruling Tory members that I make the following declaration:

    1. I have voted in every election since eligible at the age of 18.
    2. Bar once, I have always voted for the Conservative Party candidate as the least worst option.
    3. In view off Cllr Spooner’s actions, and particularly the continued suppression of housing numbers calculation, I will never vote Conservative again.
    4. It is high time that Residents’ Associations in Guildford took an active role in putting forward apolitical candidates for the council.
