Long-awaited Road Repairs Under Way In Park Barn

Much-needed and long-awaited repairs to Cabell Road in Park Barn are now being done.

Cabell Road, Park Bark, is closed while road reapirs take place – as seen here in front of the community centre.

However, the work may take some time to complete as the foundations beneath the road’s existing concrete slabs, has, in parts, been washed away. This means the work is more complicated than a simple resurfacing job.

In June this year, in a previous story on this website about the condition of the road, County Councillor Fiona White (Lib Dem) Guildford West stated that joins between the concrete slabs that make up the road surface have not been kept watertight and water had seeped into the foundations of the road. The foundation is mainly clay which, when mixed with water, turns to mud and then washes away. The concrete slabs then have no base and start to break up.

Fiona White is one of the councillors who have campaigned for the repairs to be done. She said this week that she is delighted that Surrey County Council is doing the work at long last.

She added: “I am even more pleased that they are doing the major road repair work that is necessary to put right all the years of neglect.

Road closure and diversion signs in Park Barn.

“I know that it is causing a lot of disruption for residents, especially people living along Cabell Road, and I am grateful for their patience. I am also grateful for the co-operation of Safeguard buses and their drivers who are using the diversion route to still provide a good service for people in the area.

“I know that the county council had promised in the past to repair the road and nothing happened and that people were beginning to lose faith. Local councillors working with people who signed the petition to the Guildford Local Committee earlier in the year and the report in The Guildford Dragon News all helped to make sure that the work was not deferred yet again. It only goes to show what influence local people can have.

It has been suggested that the road repairs in Park Barn may not be completed until February.

Guildford Borough Councillor for the Westborough ward, Julia McShane (Lib Dem), also said she is pleased that the work is now being done and thanked residents for being patient while parts of Cabell Road are closed and while the buses are diverted along other roads in Park Barn.

She added that she believed that the petition presented at the Guildford Local Committee was instrumental in getting the go-head for the work.

Today I have spoken to the Surrey Highways officer who is working on the Cabell Road maintenance scheme and it looks as though the work will take longer than originally planned. I know that will mean a longer period of disruption in the area but it does mean that the contractors are working to identify all the issues and to deal with them.

Once again I would like to thank residents for their patience and to ask people who park on the diversion route through Broomfield and Pond Meadow to make sure that the buses can continue to run.
