A man is in a critical condition in hospital after collapsing at Guildford police station last night (Monday, August 12).
The 34-year-old collapsed around 10.35pm after being taken to the police station due to his arrest on suspicion of possession of cannabis and class A drugs with intent to supply.
The man, who remains in a serious condition at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, had been arrested after officers searched an address in Boxgrove Park, Guildford.
A second man, aged 40 years, who was also arrested in connection with the incident, was also taken to hospital after collapsing at the scene while officers were searching the premises. He was treated by an ambulance crew before being taken to hospital and is currently in custody at Staines police station after being discharged.
It is believed both men had taken an unknown substance. A quantity of white powder was seized at the address and this is currently being analysed.
Surrey Police said this evening a full investigation into the incident, including what caused the men to collapse, has been launched and enquiries remain ongoing. The matter has also been referred to the IPCC (Independent Police Complaints Commission) for its consideration.
West Surrey Neighbourhood Superintendent Duncan Greenhalgh said: “Drug use and dealing in any form will not be tolerated in Surrey. We are working closely with local partners and other agencies to raise awareness amongst substance users of the risks associated with taking drugs.”
Anyone with information about drug dealing is asked to call Surrey Police on 101. If you have information but do not want to give your name you can pass details to the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
