A man was sentenced on Wednesday, August 24 to three years in prison for a robbery at an off licence and shop in Worplesdon Road, Guildford on Wednesday, January 26 this year.
Lee Shopland, 31, of Willow Way, Guildford, was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court after pleading guilty to robbery.
Surrey Police said officers were called to the premises at around 7.30am, following the robbery.
A police spokesperson said: “Shopland had entered the store and approached the counter where he pushed past the shop assistant and attempted to take money from the till.
“The shop assistant bravely tried to hinder Shopland, getting in front of him to prevent him from escaping. He then pushed past the victim to get to the front of the shop. The victim then grabbed Shopland by his sweatshirt at which point he then turned round and hit the shop assistant in the face in order to escape.”
Shopland took £200 in cash and cigarettes.
Officers managed to identify Shopland from CCTV gathered at the scene and nearby stores.
Investigating officer, Detective Constable Claire Jones, said: “The sentence reflects the seriousness of the offence and demonstrates that this type of violent and threatening behaviour will not be tolerated in our local communities.
“I’d like to commend the victim for their bravery and their actions in challenging Shopland and trying to prevent him from leaving the shop.”

Robbery is bad but three years is not good.
As they sang in West Side Story:
Dear kindly Sergeant Krupke
You gotta understand
It’s just our bringin’ upke
That gets us out of hand…
