Police issued an appeal for witnesses yesterday and have now thanked all those who came forward

Surrey police reported last night (January 9) that the death of the man whose body was found in Guildford earlier in the day was being treated at “unexplained” but they did not believe there were any suspicious circumstances.

It was just after 7.15am yesterday that police were called to Hazel Avenue on the Bellfields Estate by a member of the public, who had discovered the man’s body outside a residential address.

The latest police statement says: “While formal identification is yet to take place, officers now believe they have identified the man, who is in his 30s. The man’s next of kin has been informed and our thoughts are with them.

“Following our investigation, the death is being treated as unexplained, but we do not believe there to be any suspicious circumstances. We are preparing a case to pass to the Coroner. ”

In a further development, the police are making a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) relating to police contact with the man before the incident.

The police are no longer appealing for information about the man’s death and have offered a reassurance that “there is no wider risk to the public”.

After the man’s body was found, Hazel Avenue was closed between the junction with Lime Grove and Willow Way but the road was re-opened during the afternoon.

At that time, as the investigation began, Detective Chief Inspector Mark Butterworth said: “I understand there will be a lot of concern about what has happened and we have a dedicated team of officers working hard to identify this man and establish the timeline of events that led to his death.”
