Guildford private hospital Mount Alvernia has suspended children’s surgery after a health watchdog raised “serious concerns”.
Immediate improvements to “protect people from coming to harm” have been demanded by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) of the BMI-run hospital in Harvey Road.
Inspectors visited the hospital in December 2012 and January 2013.
On Mount Alvernia Hospital’s website the Chief Executive Officer of BMI Healthcare, Stephen Collier, has apologised saying that the failings at the hospital are entirely unacceptable.
The statement begins: “I would like to go on record to state that the failings at Mount Alvernia during 2012 were entirely unacceptable. The hospital’s practices let BMI and our patients down and I apologise for that.”

The CQC has said: “Following the inspection CQC raised serious concerns with the provider and formally warned them that immediate improvements were required to protect people from coming to harm.
“As a result of our concerns being raised with them, BMI agreed to voluntarily suspend children’s surgical admissions at the hospital and to start making other changes required. We have continued to monitor the hospital closely. Full details of our inspection will be published shortly.”
This evening an ITV news, outside broadcast van was observed by the hospital.

This is what happens when in the space of a generation a much respected local private hospital, run by trustees, becomes part of a large UK owned private health provider which, in turn, is owned by a South African company i.e. the culture changes.
