Guildford MP Anne Milton joined walkers raising much needed funds for Water Aid on Saturday morning at Newlands Corner.
The annual sponsored walk was organised by the West Surrey local group in support of Water Aid – a project that aims to transform lives of the world’s poorest people by giving them access to safe water and sanitation.
More than 70 families and individuals of all ages took part with four circular routes to choose from. These ranged from a half mile hard surface circuit suitable for buggies and wheelchairs to eight miles on the downs.
The money raised will go to a new Water Aid campaign ‘To be a girl’. Until September 9, the UK Government will match every donation to the ‘To be a girl’ appeal – doubling the difference for girls around the world.
Water Aid works in 27 countries across Africa, Asia, the Pacific region and central America, and to date has helped more than 15 million people. It works with local partner organisations in those countries, who under stand local issues, and provides them with the skills and support to help communities set up and manage practical sustainable projects that meet their real needs.

The latest news is that more than £5,000 has so far been raised from Saturday’s walk.
Anne said she was delighted to do her bit and completed the half mile route with some parents and their young children – one of whom was under a year old; while the other, just over a year, was taking part in their second ‘walk’. Anne thanked all the volunteers who helped run the event at Newlands Corner.
