The White Hart in the affluent and desirable Wood Street Village reopened on November 12 after renovations and with a new menu and a fantastic, enthusiastic new management.
The new owner, Axel Murrle, spoke about his decision to buy the the 16th-century pub. “I have spent my career working in hospitality for some great companies and I developed a passion for great food, great drinks and excellent service.
“It soon became apparent to me that I wanted to put my own mark on the industry and start a company of my own.
“I started this journey back in 2019 and I was very close to completing on a site in Cobham, but Covid put a stop to my dream. As the pandemic restrictions started to lift, I pursued my research for the right site and luckily for me, The White Hart was up for sale.
“When I first visited the pub back in January 2022, it felt like ‘love at first sight’ and I knew then, it was exactly what I was looking for.”
Axel will be supported by a wealth of knowledge and experience from his team at The White Hart. He said: “Oliver Lillywhite, our head chef, has extensive experience in some of the finest dining spots in Surrey. While general manager Jason Fogden brings a wealth of experience from running local taverns, bars, cafes and restaurants across Surrey and Central London.”
Along with his business partner Lee Johnson, Axel has no doubt that The White Hart will flourish under the new leadership. He said: “We are all sure that our combined experience will see The White Hart into a wonderful new era and we are looking forward to welcoming back existing customers and new.”
Axel said there will be a fantastic fusion of two cuisines. “My vision has always been to offer delightful Spanish tapas, croquetas de jamon Iberico is one of my favourite tapas, with classic British main courses.”
As an early Christmas gift from the new owners is that are offering a free glass of their amazing NV cuvee classic Pere Ventura cava on arrival when having one main course per person.
The offer runs Monday to Friday, from December 12 to December 30, then seven days per week throughout the whole of January 2023.

Bravos, bravas* and brilliant news are definitely the order of the day. A welcome bit of cheering up and positive vibes emanating from this new venture.
Cobham’s loss is Wood Street’s gain. Much improved menu over the one from my childhood with offered a choice of plain or cheese and onion crisps, or maybe even the exotic smokey bacon and a card of KP nuts. Deserves to be a huge success.

We had a lovely evening on Monday (November 6). It was a combined birthday for myself and another family member both born on the 6th but four years apart.
We were very well attended by our excellent waitress. She was attentive and looked after us beautifully. We’ve been patrons for many years and found the newly refurbished surroundings very welcome and comfortable. Well done.
Everyone’s food was a treat for the eye as well as the palate. When our desserts arrived they were topped with a candle for the two birthday people!delightful surprise and evidence of really caring for your guests.
We will be returning soon and look forward to our next White Hart experience. Plus the cappuccinos are served in proper large cups! Delicious!
