The Arts Society Guildford is hosting a lecture on Vincent Van Gough by the Rt Revd Christopher Herbert.
It takes place on Wednesday, April 10, at Onslow Village Hall. Titled Sunflowers and Lumiere, it will reveal the world of the artist, who, under the grey skies of northern Europe, longed for the sun.
Out of his inner turmoil and with the unstinting help of his brother Theo, Van Gogh explored colour and landscape in ways that have shifted everyone’s perception.
Mr Herbert has lectured at the National Gallery, the Courtauld Institute, King’s College, London, Westminster Abbey, and the University of Rikkyo in Japan, and at churches and cathedrals throughout England and in Italy.
Until recently, he was the Bishop of St Albans and a member of the House of Lords.
He has an MPhil and PhD in art history from the University of Leicester, has been awarded two honorary doctorates and is an honorary citizen of Fano in Italy.
The society’s lectures take place at Onslow Village Hall, The Square, Wilderness Road, GU2 7QR. Doors open at 7.30pm and lectures start at 8pm.
Tickets cost £10 (full time students £3) and are available at the door, or in advance from Guildford Tourist Information Centre in the High Street. Telephone 01483 444333 or email tic@guildford.org.uk.
