Guildford’s Circle Eight Film Group, will be reviving its local interest history production The Tales of Olde Guildford at this year’s Guildford Summer Festival at the Guildhall, at 7.45pm on Friday, July 19.
Narrated by Matthew Alexander, this popular movie features 1,000 years of Guildford’s history, legends and folklore and recreates such well known local stories such as the legend of the Silent Pool. the rabbit woman of Godalming, the legend of the Clandon dragon and the Guildford massacre of 1036.
The film also contains some more serious historical content, including the story of the Onslows of Clandon, George Abbo, Chilworth’s gunpowder mills and a vivid on-screen re-enactment of Guildford High Street’s Guy Riots in the 1860s.
Also showing will be Out of the Blue, which won Circle Eight two of the top awards at the 2019 South East Regional Film Festival in Tonbridge in May.
The film tells the life stories of Hazel and Peter Banting, who are now in their mid nineties. Before the Second World War, Hazel was a child film star working at Shepperton Studios under her stage name of Hazel Ascot. During the same war, Peter saw active service as a bomb aimer and member of the Pathfinders with RAF Bomber Command.
Making up the rest of the evening’s programme will be Circle Eight’s much acclaimed documentary Tunnel Under Hindhead, which tells the story of the four-year construction of the A3 Hindhead tunnel, which solved traffic congestion in the area and helped preserve one of Surrey’s most picturesque beauty spots, the Devil’s Punchbowl.
