The Rotary Club of Guildford is hosting An Evening with Terry Waite at Holy Trinity Church, Guildford on Saturday, October 7. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.
In the 1980s, as an envoy for the Church of England, Terry Waite travelled to Lebanon to try and secure the release of four hostages. But he was kidnapped himself and held captive in solitary confinement for a period of 1,763 days from January 1987 until November 1991.
During this period of almost five years, Terry was deprived of all company, books and writing materials. He was aware that doing without these everyday things could lead to a state of rapid mental deterioration and he had to devise ways of maintaining himself in a mentally healthy state.
One of the ways in which he did this was by exercising his brain by writing in his head. At this talk he will discuss the conditions he endured and show some of his writings and share his reflections during this time of severe deprivation.
Tickets for cost £20, and include wine and canapes. They can be obtained from the Guildford Tourist Information Centre at 155, High Street, Guildford, or by calling 01483 444333/4, or online at www.visitguildford.com
All the proceeds from the evening will be donated to Terry Waite’s own charity Hostage UK, which ensures that hostages and their families get the support and guidance they need to survive the challenge of kidnapping.
