Guildford Museum is launching a new programme of free informal talks about local history, objects in the museum collection or the subjects in its temporary exhibitions.
They will run fortnightly on Thursdays from January 24.
Arrive at 10.30am for tea or coffee with the talk starting at 11am and lasting for about 30 minutes.
Thursday, January 24
The first will be given by local historian Carol Brown. She will talk about the role of Guildford women in the First World War, including suffragist Noeline Baker and Beatrice Powell, who gave her home to be used as a Red Cross hospital.
Thursday, February 7
Find out more about the history of Tunsgate from town guide Nick Bale. He will talk about the changes in this distinct part of Guildford from 1918 to 2018.
Learn how Tunsgate changed from a dark, narrow street of houses to the ‘place to be; with a cinema and coffee bar. Discover more about the small businesses that moved into the area, some of which are still there today, and the development of the shopping centres.
Nick played a key role in the exhibition Tunsgate: A Century of Change, which was on display at the museum in 2018 and which, in an edited form, will be on show at the Guildford Institute from February 18 to March 9.
Thursday, February 21
Join museum volunteer Pamela Holt to hear more about Gertrude Jekyll who was born locally. Learn about her artistic studies, friendship with architect Edwin Lutyens and her garden designs.
Pamela will also tell more about Jekyll’s interest in old Surrey crafts. The talk will take place in the museum’s ground floor gallery which was designed to house Jekyll’s craft collection and there will be an opportunity to see some of the objects she collected.
Thursday, March 7
Emma Raymond, the museum’s curatorial assistant, will talk about some of the objects on display in the Our History Our Identity exhibition. This display focuses on some of the rural communities within the borough of Guildford and their history and identity.

What a good way to get people to go to Guildford Museum to see what is on offer and also to support our independent traders while visiting the town.
