Following on from its sell-out Shakespeare summer production last year at the Minack Theatre in Cornwall, Guildburys Theatre Company is performing Jessica Swale’s 2016 Olivier Award winning comedy Nell Gwynn in Farnham and Haslemere.
Audiences are invited to roll out a rug and enjoy picnic-theatre at the two open-air venues in Surrey.
The production run begins in the grounds of Waverley Abbey House near Farnham from Wednesday to Saturday, July 12 to 15.
Two weeks later, the company moves to another open-air venue, Haslemere Museum, from Thursday, to Saturday, July 27 to 29.
Guildburys Theatre Company has been putting on critically acclaimed shows in Surrey for more than 50 years and has performed in Guildford, Woking, Farnham, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and more recently by invitation at the Minack Theatre in Cornwall.
The aim of the company is to produce plays by classical and modern playwrights, achieving the highest possible standards for the enjoyment of its audiences.
Nell Gwynn is a tender and rumbustious romp about the orange-seller turned actress, who captivates theatre audiences, and then wins the heart of Charles II.
Director Laura Sheppard is delighted to be staging the show in such great locations. She said: “I first saw Nell Gwynn in the open-air when it premiered at The Globe in London two years ago. I thought it would make an ideal choice for our two Surrey venues.
“It is very well-written, fast-paced and is simply a show filled with joy. The cast will be making the most of the Restoration theatre set, so the audience may well find actors sharing their picnic space!”
