The myths and mysteries of the gothic vampire horror story Dracula will unfold in Guildburys Theatre Company’s latest production at the Electric Theatre from Wednesday to Saturday, November 14, to 17.
Dracula has been adapted hundreds of times for stages and screen since it was written by Bram Stoker more than 120 years ago.
This version of the classic novel has been given a modern twist by playwright Liz Lochhead, but the characters and events are close to the original work.
A lawyer travels to Transylvania to carry out business for a mysterious client and finds himself in a castle filled with terror. Back in England his fiancée and her friends are plagued by supernatural phenomena – no one feels safe. Dracula is on his way to prey on new victims.
This production explores power struggles: good versus evil and the clash of old-world superstition and modern science in a time of uncertainty towards the end of Queen Victoria’s reign. But above all, it is a compelling story of seduction, power and insanity.
Director Michael Thonger said: “No performance of Victorian gothic literature would be complete without a degree of melodrama – this production is a feast for the senses. We want our audiences to suspend their disbelief for the evening and be drawn in to the rich background of sights and sounds which reflect this adaptation.
“The show features original music, a set designed in German Expressionist style reflecting the terror and intrigue in the characters’ minds, dozens of bespoke props and staging tricks designed to leave a lasting impression.”
