A concert to celebrate Inspiring Women in music, as composers, conductors and performers, includes an appearance by the Amies Freedom Choir, an ensemble including female survivors of human trafficking, 2020 winners of the prestigious Women of the Year Community Spirit Award.In the wonderful setting of the Guildford Cathedral on Saturday, March 12 at 7pm, the climax of the evening will be Cecilia McDowall’s Everyday Wonders; The Girl From Aleppo. The music of this work depicts the incredible journey undertaken by Nujeen Mustafa in a wheelchair from Syria to Germany.
The solo violin part will be played by violinist Harriet Mackenzie and sung by the Guildford Cathedral Girls Choir, performed by the Conservatoire Concerts Chamber Orchestra and conducted by Katherine Dienes-Williams, Organist and Master of the Choristers at Guildford Cathedral.
The concert, celebrating International Women’s Day, is part of Guildford Cathedral’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Cecilia McDowall and Dominique Le Gendre will discuss their compositions with the audience and Guildford-based poet Alwyn Marriage will read some of her poetry, which will fit the themes of difficult journeys and overcoming adversity, which permeate the event.
The concert will also include the girls from Guildford Cathedral singing works by Cecilia McDowall and Imogen Holst. There will be an instrumental interlude with Harriet Mackenzie, Conservatoire Concerts Quartet, and a professional cellist performing Riff for Strings and Snare by composer Dominique Le Gendre.
