From May to July this year, visitors will be able to browse some of the most impressive, well-tended and relaxing gardens in Surrey and north-east Hampshire, with the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice’s open gardens event.
Residents will be opening their gardens to raise money to support the care which Phyllis Tuckwell offers patients and families who are living with an advanced or terminal illness, such as cancer – and the hospice will be joining in too.
Gardens of many different sizes and designs will be on display and for a small fee, visitors are invited to wander round, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of each and perhaps taking away a few ideas to try out on their own green spaces at home.
On Saturday, July 14, Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice will be opening its beautiful grounds to visitors. Lovingly tended by the charity’s volunteers, the hospice garden mixes open green space with small, quiet areas. Visitors can sit and enjoy the array of shrubs and flowers on display, admire the various sculptures and reflect on the memory tree, which bears small metal leaves dedicated to the memory of loved ones.
Every day, the charity supports over 250 patients, relatives and carers – in their own homes, in the community, at the hospice in Farnham and at the Beacon Centre in Guildford – through medical and nursing care, therapies, counselling, social work advice and practical support.
Many of the open gardenlocations are partly wheelchair-friendly and some welcome well-behaved dogs on leads. Refreshments will be available at some locations, and some will also be selling plants.
Visit www.pth.org.uk/open-gardens for more details, and look out for Phyllis Tuckwell’s open gardens brochure, which will be published soon.
